Tax hits the headlines again
Two cases on residence of individuals for tax purposes have recently been widely reported in the national press; in each case, the cases reveal what are generally considered to be new developments, although HMRC denies that this is the case. One of the cases is Gaines-Cooper v CIR in which Mr. Gaines-Cooper sought judicial review of the decision of HMRC that he was resident and ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom from 1993/94 onwards. He argued that he had relied on HMRC's guidance in their own booklet IR20 and HMRC were now applying principles which were not set out in that booklet. Furthermore, they were applying those principles retrospectively in his case. To a certain extent, the...

Autism and Communication
Getting one’s needs met and to exist happily in one’s family, community and beyond is dependent on the ability to communicate. As non-autistic individuals we can use ourselves to communicate our needs and express our feelings. The autistic individual depending on their functioning level, has anywhere from extremely limited (nonexistent in some) to some ability to ask for their needs to be met. Some people with autism seem to communicate by perseverating on a topic that seems to not relate at all to whatever the topic might be. For example, one child may become fixated on televisions and only be able to talk about this subject, no matter what else is being discussed. It is not...

Children with Autism and P.E.C.S. Is It Any Good?
PECS was created by Andy Bondy and Lori Frost as a systematic way to teach children with autism and other communication difficulties to initiate communication. It has been around since the mid 1980s and is widely used with children with autism. One of the things I like about it is that it reasonably straightforward to use and can bring about fairly rapid changes in behaviour. Children with autism by definition have difficulties with communication, these in turn can lead to behaviours that can be challenging. PECS can lead to a reduction in such behaviours. PECS training begins with identifying what a child is most motivated by and teaching him to exchange a picture card of the item for the item...

Food Contamination and Some of the Consequences
Why do they do it? WHY? I have been a baker for 53 years and until this last few years I have never heard of so many problems in the food industry. This is my industry! I have worked with food production ALL my life. OK. I know technology has gotten to the point where we; no, where science; has gotten to the point where they can dissect the contents of blood and just about any other substance. And they have also cut into the genetics of the wheat berry. But really, has it helped? I seriously doubt it myself, and for years now I have had my say about genetically altered foods. People have told me to shut up, they say I don't know what I am talking about. If they mean that I do not have a degree in...

The Brain More Than a Computer
ANOTHER superb organ is the human brain. It, together with the rest of the nervous system, is often compared to man-made computers. Of course, computers are constructed by humans and operate according to step-by-step instructions predetermined by human programmers. Yet, many people believe that no intelligence was responsible for “wiring” and “programming” the human brain. Although extremely fast, computers handle only one piece of information at a time, whereas the human nervous system processes millions of pieces of information simultaneously. For example, during a stroll in the springtime, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, listen to the song of birds, and smell the flowers. All these...
What Color Is The Brain Cancer Ribbon
This finding indicates the brain plays a key role in resveratrol's positive effect on diabetes. What Color Is The Brain Cancer Ribbon It also indicates the benefits could occur independently of diet and body weight. The research study's data gives strong evidence that the brain has a principle role in resveratrol's positive effect on diabetes and that this positive influence could happen independently of diet or weight. If this data is correct it could lead to a brand new type 2 diabetes treatments that would target the brain. Unfortunately, red wine is not likely to improve blood sugar and insulin levels because resveratrol does not cross the blood-brain barrier very easily. Dr. Coppari, member of...
Lung And Brain Cancer Prognosis
They are cries of the organism for more oxygen. Lung And Brain Cancer PrognosisIs it possible that our abnormal breathing can influence the internal breathing (gas exchange) and oxygenation of all body cells, tumours included? How? Normal breathing is light, easy, invisible (no chest or belly movements) and inaudible (no panting, no wheezing, no sighing, no yawning, no sneezing, no coughing, no deep inhalations or exhalations). The mouth is closed. How to measure oxygenation? Use the breath-holding time test. Sit down and rest for 5-7 minutes. Completely relax all your muscles, including the breathing muscles. This relaxation produces natural spontaneous exhalation (breathing out). Hold your nose at...
Swedish Study Links Brain Damage to Cell Phone Radiation
Until a few years ago, most of the studies on the dangers of cell phone electromagnetic emissions were concentrated on the possibility that the devices may heat the brain or directly cause cancer. And many of those studies were sponsored or financed either directly or indirectly by the telecommunications industry. Because such studies concluded that thermal (heating) effects were too minor to pose a serious health risk, or no direct link could be made to cancerous tumors, an impression was created that cell phones were safe. The telecommunication giants that manufacture and market cell phones, build cell phone towers, and sell air time and communication services, spent many millions of dollars on...
Minutes of Exercise a Week is All it Takes to Avoid Falls and a Severely Compromised Life
After 60 years of working I suppose my father could afford to buy a coffee shop if he wanted to, but he won't pay $3 for a cup of coffee. I don't blame him. He also won't incur the expense nor take the time to stick with a strength training program either. On this point I take issue. I took him to a health club once and showed him a simple strength training routine. I told him to do it once a week; it would only take a half an hour. I told him a year from now he could be significantly stronger or significantly weaker. It was his choice. A year latter I asked him if he ever when back. As I expected he said no. He was content to walk for his exercise. During that time he had a couple of nasty falls...
Several studies have looked at the value of lutein for macular degeneration. One research group refers to it as "anti-aging ophthalmology". They group it with lifestyle related diseases. It does seem that unhealthy eating habits and other lifestyle factors, such as smoking, increase the risk, but there are genetic factors that come into play as well. Researchers first began to look at lutein and macular degeneration, because the antioxidant is one of the components of a healthy retina. The retina is light sensitive tissue that lines the inner surface of the eye. The macula is a tiny spot within the retina that is responsible for central vision. Light striking the retina causes a cascade of chemical...
Did you know that depression and anxiety are so closely linked that they often are mistaken for one another? If you are concerned that you suffer from either or both disorders, it is first important that you define the difference between the two. Now, depression is often thought of to be a "low" part of someone's life, due to the "low" amount of energy a sufferer typically feels. Contrary to that belief, however, those who suffer from depression often feel overwhelmed, or "anxious" which is what can cause the depression in the first place. Depression often brings emotions such as anger, hopelessness, and despair along with it. On the contrary, those with an anxiety disorder do not have low energy...
Keep Icy Sidewalks and Driveways Clear
When the mercury dips below freezing, there are all sorts of things that you have to prepare for. There will likely be snow, which means you have to break out the snow shovel or the snow blower. It might be time to put new tires on the car to stop the slipping and sliding. And if you have a driveway or sidewalk, it's time to make sure they are clear of ice. If they are not, you can find yourself-or someone from the neighborhood-in the emergency room having a doctor in La Rose scrubs tending to a broken wrist or putting stitches in a head wound caused by a fall. Not only is this dangerous, it's also illegal in some communities. You may get ticketed and have to pay a fine if you don't keep your...

Many patients fail to see a dentist when they have an aching tooth because they are scared or simply can't afford to pay for any costly dental procedures. What if you knew that decayed tooth could be deadly. Would you get it fixed immediately? Tragically, one mother discovered the truth the hard way after her twelve-year-old son died after failing to receive the proper treatment in time. An Unnecessary Death The Maryland boy died when the infection from his tooth subsequently entered his brain. Doctors performed numerous surgeries on the boy, but were unable to save him. The tragic event occurred because his mother was too poor to pay for dental care and could not travel the three hours to find a...
Serzone Side Effects Lead to Serzone lawsuits
Serzone is a prescription medication that is given to patients who are seriously depressed (Dysthymia,Major Depression, and Bipolar Disorder) to alleviate the symptoms of depression such as sleep and eating habits, changes in weight, coordination, fatigue, unjustified feelings of worthlessness or suicidal thoughts which prohibit normal functioning. It balances levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain which doctors think will help alleviate symptoms of depression much like the phenylpiperazine antidepressant, Trazodone (Desyrel). Between nerve endings in the brain, there are synapses. When a signal is transmitted, you feel it when chemicals are released from one nerve to another. Seratonin...
My Whole Life Changed This Year
My whole life changed this year... I am a 33 year old wife, mother, teacher, and home business owner. This past year I had a house fire, a flood, and my husband had a MASSIVE heart attack and survived! Amazingly, so did I. Don't let me kid you, it was difficult, very difficult but I have learned two important survival skills: 1. Have faith in God. 2. Always take care of your health. I wasn't always religious and I am not what they call a "bible beater." But my faith has helped guide me through the roughest times especially this past year. The power of prayer is amazing! I am a witness. My husband, for example, almost died a few months ago and today he is the picture of health. Unknown to us, at age...
Safety on the Ski Slopes
The death of movie and Broadway star Natasha Richardson, the 1997 death of Robert Kennedy's son Michael in 1997, and the 1998 death of Senator and one time television star and singer Sonny Bono as a result of skiing accidents highlights and illustrates the dangers of both hidden and obvious injuries that can result in paralysis or death. The cause of Natasha Richardson's death, according to the autopsy report, was an epidural hematoma. Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office, stated that an epidural hematoma causes bleeding between the skull and the lining of the brain. Doctors also reported that if Ms. Richardson had sought or agreed to medical attention...
Lance Armstrong Quotes For Inspiration
Without even reading these Lance Armstrong quotes or reading about his story, tell me one person that hasn't heard the name Lance Armstrong at least once? He has become a household name for his athletic ability and his courage. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 1996 and was said to be can free by 1997, just one year later. Before his recovery he said that he was going to be back to competitive racing but by that time his team "Cofidis" had no confidence that it was possible for him to do that. They cancelled his contract and Lance Armstrong was left to find a sponsor when he returned to racing. Just to show you why these Lance Armstrong quotes are so inspirational we must look at...
Texas Child Health Insurance
A growing number of parents have traveled to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. That Hospital offers an ever-expanding spectrum of specialized medical care for children. Of course, sensible parents know what they need to do before heading to Houston, Texas. Child Health Insurance provides the best coverage for such parents. Texas Child Health Insurance, like Texas Children's Hospital, provides support to parents who must care for children with special needs. Such insurance generally fails to cover the best medical care for each traditional family (a mother, father and siblings). Parents with...
Hypnosis Imaging
Hypnosis imaging is becoming very popular with doctors today. There have been many findings about hypnosis through the practice of imaging. Many of the findings include pain reduction, hallucinations, and more. A brain acts very differently when a person is hypnotized rather than when a person is not. The use of hypnosis imaging is finding many differences. The use of hypnosis imaging is the use of an MRI on a patient while they are under hypnosis. The doctor will do a full brain scan and look at the different nerves and parts of the brain. The doctors will examine parts of the brain that feel pain, see colors, and how the brain is responding while under hypnosis. Hypnosis imaging has shown...
Optogenetics - A Fast Growing Niche In The Internet World
The world is changing with new inventions and technologies. Various new terms, concepts and phenomenon are now receiving great attention with the help of which we can really invent new drugs and medicines. One such new phenomenon is about the Optogenetics with the help of which doctors can treat various critical diseases. You would be surprised to know that researchers have found out a way through which they can find out more about the functions of the brain. Optogenetics is known as the lighting up of the brain and this process is conducted by passing optic fiber lights through the skull. Fiber optic lights are used during festivals for decorations and they are also used for signs and signals. In...
Educational Dog Games For Children
A considerable amount of adults, including parents and teachers, are constantly looking for methods and techniques to aid them in the education process of the children. Additionally, in some cases brain exercises are requested in part by the child's psychologist, as a way to stimulate the child's brain and help it develop properly. Many children suffer from short term memory failures, which lead them to do poorly in school in subjects such as math, and spelling. In order to stimulate this part of the brain, doctors recommend the use of games, such as puzzles, in which the child is required to use his short term memory. This recommendation is based on the assumption that the game will provide enough...

Multiple Sclerosis and Emotions!
This just happened to me on 3/1/08. I was reading a book to my six year son about Lou Gehrig. Lou died of ALS which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease around the age of 37. As I read the pages I was overcome by emotions about Lou having ALS, about my own multiple sclerosis and Lou dying at such a young age. Although I didn't cry tears were welling up in my eyes and my throat was getting choked up. I didn't want my son to see me like this so I quickly finished the book and we went on to Cat In The Hat. I don't know what it was but my emotions were suddenly out of whack. To think that a great ballplayer who was also a nice man succumbed to ALS just didn't seem fair. But I realize there are alot...

What You MUST Know About MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
If you or a loved one is suffering from MS (multiple sclerosis) then you probably know how horrible this disease is. However, it is possible that you don’t know all there is to know. Those suffering from it, or watching loved ones suffer only see the aftermath. What they don’t see is what is actually happening to the person’s body. This article is going to try to shed some light on that in layman’s terms. In many ways, MS is not unlike AIDS as it is an autoimmune disease where the body itself attacks its own cells and tissues. What most people don’t understand is why this happens. The cause of MS is still not known. What IS known is that the immune system of the body does not respond as it...
Treatment For Multiple Sclerosis With No Side Effects
Many of those who already have multiple sclerosis are very strong in trying different new modes of treatment. For example, for each of the twenty-nine days with a person, the person gives a certain thing to whomever would listen. Others would heartily give information and gratitude or thanks, those who have MS or multiple sclerosis give out their support. After the full length of twenty days, those who had MS actually had a better time and the disease's symptoms were greatly reduced. None for those who are verbal with the test's possible results might scoff and leave them to know that it was only very scientific, despite the fact that he was a trained scientist who only feels bad. In fact, he has...
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis Subtypes
Despite the ongoing efforts of medical scientists to reveal the factors responsible for causing multiple sclerosis, the exact reasons why the disorder occurs in otherwise healthy persons remain unknown. Although various factors are suspected to trigger the occurrence of multiple sclerosis (viral or bacterial infections) or to facilitate its progression (genetic dysfunctions and various external, environmental factors), medical scientists haven’t yet reached a consensus regarding the exact causes of the disorder. Multiple sclerosis is a type of autoimmune disorder, involving abnormal activity of the immune system, which turns against healthy body cells instead of fighting against intruding...
